Written Answers. - Consultant Appointments.

Michael Noonan

Question:

271 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has given financial clearance to the Mid-Western Health Board to proceed with the recruitment of an additional vascular surgeon for the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in County Limerick; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a report on vascular surgery stated that there was a requirement for three vascular surgery posts in the mid-west region; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that members of the public presenting with acute vascular emergencies in the Mid-Western Health Board region are at risk while only two vascular surgeons are employed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30883/01]

The Mid-Western Health Board has identified the need for an additional vascular surgeon in its development proposals for next year. The post will be considered in the context of the overall availability of funding in 2002 and the board's development priorities.
