Vol. 545 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

348 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if there is scope for recruitment into the Garda Síochána at assistant superintendent or higher level where a prospective applicant, being Irish born, has a law degree and relevant police force experience in another jurisdiction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30565/01]

The Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988, as amended, govern general recruitment into the Garda Síochána. The regulations do not provide for recruitment into the Garda Síochána at a rank other than that of garda. However, in the context of North-South co-operation in policing matters, the question of making provision for lateral entry of officers of the Police Service of Northern Ireland into the Garda Síochána is currently being examined.
