Prior to the introduction of direct provision in April 2000, asylum seekers were accommodated primarily in bed and breakfast type accommodation by health boards, mainly the then Eastern Health Board, acting on an agency basis for the local authorities.
The Northern Area Health Board, on behalf of the three area health boards in the eastern region, is providing emergency accommodation for approximately 2,500 asylum seekers, the great majority of whom are either pregnant or who have given birth, at 54 properties in the greater Dublin area. Details of such accommodation are available from the health board.
