Question:

153 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to concerns expressed about the condition of the runway at Baldonnel Aerodrome; the findings of the recent survey undertaken into the condition of the runway; the steps being taken to ensure the runway is maintained in a satisfactory condition; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30546/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 51 and 153 together.

A consultant was appointed on 11 July 2001 to report on the runways in Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel. The report, received and approved by my Department on the 16 October 2001, concluded that while the runways are in excellent structural condition, there are some problems in relation to the crossfall of the runways and with localised spalling of the runway surface which must be addressed.

The consultant advised on the necessary interim remedial works to be carried out, pending the appointment of contractors to carry out major resurfacing. Remedial works such as regular sweeping of the runway are carried out as necessary.

In addition, a brief was prepared by the Army Corps of Engineers to provide the complete upgrading of the runways and taxiways. A number of civil engineering consultancy firms were selected, and interviews were held on 15, 19 and 22 November 2001.

The successful firm has been appointed and has been requested to prepare tender documentation as soon as possible.
