Question:

78 Mr. D'Arcy asked the Minister for Defence the recruitment plans he has for the Naval Service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30627/01]

In line with the Government's policy of continuous recruitment to the Permanent Defence Force general service recruitment to the Naval Service is ongoing.

Competitions for direct entry watchkeeping officers, marine engineer officers and electrical artificers are being held at present and there are plans to hold further competitions next year.

Competitions for electrical engineer officers and engine room artificers will be advertised shortly. The cadet competition 2002 will be advertised in the new year from which Naval Service cadets will be appointed.

Interviews for non-commissioned personnel who applied for positions on a course with a view to being commissioned as watchkeeping officers are being held at present. A further commissioning from the ranks, CFR, competition will be held in 2002.

A Defence Forces recruitment campaign will be launched in the new year with a view to further enhancing recruitment to the Defence Forces including the Naval Service.
