Vol. 545 No. 5

Written Answers. - Naturalisation Certificates.

Michael Ring

Question:

170 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason a certificate of naturalisation was not granted to a person (details supplied) in County Mayo. [31142/01]

The Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, 1956, as amended in 1986, provides that the granting of a certificate of naturalisation is at my absolute discretion and it is not policy, therefore, to disclose the reasons for refusal in an individual case. The person referred to may wish to consider requesting access to the records held on his naturalisation file under the Freedom of Information Act, 1997. Further infor mation in this regard may be obtained from the freedom of information officer in the press and information office of my Department at telephone numbers 01 6028358 or 6028541. It is open to the individual concerned to apply again at any time in the future provided he meets the statutory requirements at the time of application.
