Vol. 545 No. 5

Written Answers. - Departmental Task Force.

Michael Ring

Question:

98 Mr. Ring asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the position regarding the task force in Ballinrobe, County Mayo. [31139/01]

The task force in Ballinrobe was established in 1999 under the chairmanship of the county manager following the closure of Betatherm. It undertook a study of 35 employees of Betatherm, 30 people responded and it was discovered that 17 people had found employment. The local employment services group also organised training by FÁS for 14 people in order to assist them to return to work.

The task force will shortly be wound up by the chairman and I will then receive a final report from him.

The employment situation in the Mayo region has recently received a significant boost. On 28 November I announced that DeCare International will significantly expand its existing Irish operation in County Mayo with the establishment of a new facility at Crossmolina and the expansion of its existing operation at Claremorris. As a result a total of 210 new jobs will be created in the Mayo region. This will provide additional employment opportunities for the people of the area and will make a further substantial contribution to its economy.
