Vol. 546 No. 1

Written Answers. - Election Deposits.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

36 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has considered the implications regarding the recent High Court decision that the requirements for financial deposits from Dáil Éireann or European candidates was unconstitutional; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31106/01]

The Government has recently approved the drafting of a Bill to provide for an alternative to deposits following the High Court decision in the Redmond case. The Bill will provide that non-party candidates at Dáil, European and local elections will be required to obtain the signatures of ten registered electors as assentors to the nomination. Candidates who are nominated by a registered political party and who have a certificate of political affiliation from their political party would not have to obtain signatures on their nomination papers.
