Vol. 546 No. 3

Written Answers. - Veterinary Inspections.

Tony Gregory

Question:

133 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of veterinary inspections carried out on mink and fox farms by his Department in 1999 to 2001, inclusive. [31557/01]

I can confirm that for the years 1999 to 2001, inclusive, the following numbers of inspections were carried out by veterinary inspectors of my Department on mink farms:

Year

Number of Inspections

1999

2

2000

5

2001

2

These include welfare inspections and inspections for a number of other reasons such as the import and export of mink. While carrying out such inspections veterinary inspectors are always cognisant of welfare issues. I am aware also that a number of other inspections under this latter heading were carried out in the years in question. The precise number of such inspections is not readily available.
The agricultural inspectorate of my Department also inspect mink farms to check compliance with the conditions of the licence granted to mink farms under the Musk Rats Act, 1933. The number of inspections carried out on mink farms by the agricultural inspectorate during the years 1999 to 2001, inclusive, is as follows:

Year

Number of Inspections.

1999

6

2000

2

2001

5

There are no fox farms currently licensed by my Department.
