Vol. 546 No. 3

Written Answers. - Export Markets.

Ulick Burke

Question:

153 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the value of new markets and contracts acquired by An Bord Bia during the 2001 marketing year to date; the origin of these new markets; the products and values involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31885/01]

The realisation of new markets and outlets for Irish food produce is primarily a matter for the industry itself. The role of An Bord Bia is to promote, assist and develop the marketing of Irish food and livestock and is not to acquire contracts etc.

The future development of the food industry is dependent on its ability to remain competitive in an increasingly challenging environment. The Government, in recognition of this fact, has provided funding of £48 million under the food marketing initiatives of the National Development Plan 2000 – 2006. This funding will be administered by An Bord Bia and is intended to enhance the competitiveness and innovative capabilities of the industry. Part of the funding will be used towards the marketing finance programme which is designed to assist small companies in developing their marketing capabilities.

Operating under the brand name "Ireland the Food Island" An Bord Bia has sought to ensure continued market access and exploit new market opportunities by developing the most profitable and reliable route to the market. For example, An Bord Bia has developed a common identity for Irish beef which has been rolled out across all supermarkets in Britain and which is also being tested in other markets. This means that for the first time ever, Irish beef can be identified at consumer level in these multiples, thus creating the opportunity for repeat purchases. Exports of Irish beef will reach 335,000 tonnes this year. Exports of beef to Russia have increased this year compared to last and An Bord Bia has played an important supporting role in the re-opening of the Egyptian market.
An Bord Bia has positioned itself to anticipate significant emerging international trends so that it can continue to play a leading role in the development of the Irish food and drinks industry and works closely with producers, processors and customers to implement a wide range of activities in target markets.
