Vol. 546 No. 3

Written Answers. - Primary Health Care.

Bernard Allen

Question:

190 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he proposes to produce a separate primary care strategy document; and, if so, his reasons therefor. [31434/01]

It is widely acknowledged that primary care should be a cornerstone of a modern health service and this is reflected in the Health Strategy, Quality and Fairness: A Health System for You. The strategy sets out a new direction for primary care as the central focus of the delivery of health and personal social services. Full details of the model are outlined in Primary Care: A New Direction that was launched on the 28 November last.

Primary Care: A New Direction acknowledges the central role of primary care in the future development of our health services and proposes the introduction of an interdisciplinary team approach. This will be introduced on a phased basis using existing infrastructure and will encourage the use of public private partnerships where appropriate.

The proposed changes will improve access for all to primary care services, improve links between primary care and other parts of the health services and will encourage health promotion and disease prevention.

A copy of Primary Care: A New Direction has been forwarded to the Deputy.
