Vol. 546 No. 3

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

431 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science the national schools in County Kildare which do not have the services of an edu cational psychologist and are not included in the pilot introductory scheme, in the Oak Partnership area of County Kildare; when these schools will receive a service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31857/01]

The present situation in County Kildare is that all post-primary schools and 29 primary schools have access to the psychological service provided by the national educational psychological service. Forty primary schools do not yet have access to the service and those schools are eligible to access the scheme for commissioning psychological assessments that has been operating since September 2001.

The Civil Service and Local Government Commissioners are organising a competition on behalf of my Department to recruit more psychologists for NEPS. It is intended to make a number of appointments from this competition to the eastern region – south west area – which includes County Kildare.
