Vol. 546 No. 4

Written Answers. - Digital Terrestrial Television.

Michael Bell

Question:

23 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the implications for the plans for digital terrestrial television of the recent agreement between RTE and a company (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [31808/01]

The Government's objective in relation to the introduction of digital terrestrial television, DTT, in Ireland is to facilitate the establishment of the DTT platform. This objective is being pursued through two separate processes: the sale of the RTE transmission business and the selection of the DTT multiplex licensee. The recent agreement referred to by Deputy Bell does nothing to change the Government's objective, nor does it impact on the manner through which the Government's objective is to be achieved. When established, the DTT platform will be a commercial operation and will operate in a market where it will be subject to competition from other platforms.
