Question:

222 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of provisional licence drivers who were prosecuted in the past two years for failing to display an "L" plate while driving; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31776/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 221 and 222 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the details sought by the Deputy concerning the number of provisional drivers prosecuted who drove unaccompanied for the past two years and the number of provisional driving licence holders who were prosecuted for failure to display an "L" plate for the past two years are not readily available. It would require a disproportionate amount of Garda time to compile this information.

The overall number of prosecutions for driving licence offences, including the offences referred to by the Deputy, are set out in the following tabular statement.

Year

Number of prosecutions for driving licence offences

1998

39,191

1999

44,300

This information is contained in the annual report of the Garda Síochána, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. The latest report is in respect of 1999. The annual report for the year 2000 is not yet published.
