Vol. 546 No. 5

Written Answers. - Criminal Convictions.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

224 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his proposals to change the law in relation to the length of time a criminal conviction for minor offences stays on the record; the length of time a Garda clearance certificate should go back when issued to prospective employers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [32197/01]

The Garda Commissioner has established a working group to, inter alia, examine and make recommendations on the length of time a criminal conviction should stay on Garda records. The length of time, what is referred to as a “Garda clearance certificate”, when issued to prospective employers is also being considered in this context.
