Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

227 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a chief superintendent of an Garda Síochána in County Sligo received a formal complaint from An Taisce in January 2001 relating to the felling of trees by a person (details supplied) in county Sligo without a felling licence; if this matter has been investigated by the gardaí; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [32226/01]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the chief superintendent in Sligo received a written complaint dated 11 January 2001 regarding alleged unlawful felling of trees at a specified location.

Officials from the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources liaised with the Garda Síochána regarding this allegation. I understand the investigation is continuing and that a file will be submitted to the law officers for their directions in due course.
