Vol. 546 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

243 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number and location of Garda stations that have been listed for replacement or refurbishment; when he expects this work to be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [32441/01]

One of my priorities as Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform is to ensure that fully adequate accommodation is available for the Garda Síochána. While this is a difficult task, in view of the large number of stations involved and the fact that some of them were built before the foundation of the State, every effort is being made, and will continue to be made, to ensure a high standard of Garda premises throughout the country.

In that context, I can assure the Deputy that all Garda accommodation is continually under review to ensure that it meets the operational requirements of the Garda Síochána. Where it does not, then the required refurbishment or construction works are completed by the Office of Public Works with all due urgency, and in accordance with overall priorities within the Garda building programme and the availability of financial and other resources.
