Vol. 546 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sexual Offences.

Question:

252 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 167 of 6 December 2001, his views on media reports that a drug and other substances are used in date rape incidences; and the steps he proposes to inform members of the media of the actual position in relation to this matter. [32461/01]

I do not have any information concerning recent media reports that the drug in question and other substances are used in rape incidents. However, I am informed by the Garda authorities that there is no evidence of the use of the drug in question, or similar products, in rape incidents reported to the gardaí.

For the sake of completeness, I should say that this drug and other substances are the subject of examination by a review group established by my colleague, the Minister for Health and Children. I understand that the report of that group will be published soon.
