Written Answers. - Departmental Websites

Question:

264 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the number of hits received by his Department's website for the year 2001; the number of staff assigned to maintain the website; the cost of maintaining the website for 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [32477/01]

From figures to date for 2001 my Department's website has registered a monthly average of 199,161 hits, which would equate to an annual total of 2,389,932 hits.

Maintenance of the website is one of functions assigned to the Department's information technology unit, where two staff member have responsibility for the website, in addition to other related duties. The non-salary costs involved in maintaining and upgrading the site during 2001 were £750 for specific training for the IT unit and the press office on website updating and £8,400 in respect of technical support for upgrading the site to meet the criteria established by the World-Wide-Web Convention, W3C, in its web accessibility initiative. This initiative, aimed at facilitat ing easier website usage, has particular relevance for the blind and the partially sighted.
