Vol. 546 No. 5

Written Answers. - Terrorist Organisations.

Austin Deasy

Question:

27 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the Official IRA still exists; the stage to the best of his knowledge it decommissioned its arms; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30977/01]

I am advised by the Garda authorities that while some former members of the organisation styling itself the "Official IRA" continue to interact, particularly in the commission of crime, there is no evidence that this organisation continues to exist as a structured cohesive movement. While the "Official IRA" called a ceasefire in 1972, there has been no formalised decommissioning of weaponry.

Jack Wall

Question:

28 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress which has been made regarding the analysis of the capabilities of terrorist organisations to conduct chemical, biological or other attacks here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30646/01]

I am advised by the Garda authorities that they are in continual contact with relevant national agencies and with police forces and security services throughout the world. This process facilitates an analysis of the capabilities of terrorist organisations to conduct chemical, biological or other attacks in this jurisdiction. The many international links fostered by the Garda Síochána enables this analysis to be conducted with the best available intelligence and also facilitates the Garda authorities in preparing and continually updating threat assessments.

Question No. 29 answered with Question No. 16.
