I propose to take Questions Nos. 31 and 220 together.
The information sought by the Deputies is set out in the following tabular statements. I refer the Deputies to my replies to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 110, 125 and 930 of 3 October 2001, No. 109 of 13 November 2001 and No. 341 of 11 December 2001.
Current statistics clearly indicate that significant progress has been made in relation to the processing of asylum applications and that the increase in processing capacity which has been put in place as part of the Government's strategy is making a real impact on the backlog of cases on hands and will help to progressively reduce processing times on an incremental basis. This is evidenced by the fact that the number of backlog cases – that is, cases which are over six months old – on hands in Office of the Refugee Applications Commissioner and the Refugee Appeals Tribunal as at 30 November 2001 is now down to approximately 4,900, the vast majority of which are in the final stages of processing.
