Vol. 546 No. 5

Written Answers. - British-Irish Agreement.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

78 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Government is supporting the concept of an implementation committee for the Good Friday Agreement. [30959/01]

On 1 August, following intensive discussions with the pro-agreement parties at Weston Park, the two governments brought forward a package of proposals to help deliver the full and early implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. In making their proposals, both governments reaffirmed their view that the implementation of the agreement is a collective responsibility, and that it can only be achieved in co-operation with the parties in Northern Ireland. For that reason, we suggested that those parties committed to securing full implementation of the agreement might join the governments in an implementation group. There has been some discussion of this proposal with the parties in the period since, and it remains the Government's view that, if the parties were agreeable, such a group could have a valuable role to play.
