Question:

573 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding an application for an appointment for treatment at the Eye and Ear Royal Victorian Hospital, Dublin 2, by a person (details supplied) in County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1860/02]

Responsibility for the provision of hospital services to residents of Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow rests with the Eastern Regional Health Authority. My Department has asked the regional chief executive of the authority to investigate the position in relation to this case and to reply to the Deputy directly.

574 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Health and Children when he will approve tenders submitted by the Western Health Board for the construction of the new accident and emergency unit at Roscommon County Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1861/02]

Tenders for the construction of the new accident and emergency department at Roscommon County Hospital have not yet been submitted by the Western Health Board to my Department for approval. The board has sought approval from my Department to issue tender documents to selected contractors and the matter is being considered by the Department in conjunction with the Board. As Minister, I am committed to the proposed development at Roscommon County Hospital and I can assure the Deputy that my Department will be in touch with the board as a matter of priority.

The question of appointing an additional consultant paediatrician at Portiuncula Hospital is a matter in the first instance for the Western Health Board in the context of the funding available to the board for acute hospital service developments, the competing priorities and their service plan for 2002. My Department has asked the chief executive officer of the board to investigate the matter and reply to the Deputy directly.
