Question:

109 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of public service staff employed in the health service in each of the past five years. [3050/02]

The staffing levels in the public health service as requested by the Deputy at 31 December for each of the years 1996 to 2000 are as set out in the following table. Information in respect of 31 December 2001 is being collated by health ser vices employers at present and will be available in the coming months when the 2001 health service personnel census is published.

Note 2: The grade category of management/admin. includes staff involved in front-line services for patients (e.g. Consultants' Secretaries, Community Welfare Officers, Out-Patient and A&E Department Personnel, Ward Clerks, Medical Records Personnel).
Note 3: Figures supplied are as recorded in the annual Health Service Personnel which is recorded at 31 December each year.
Note 4: As a result of the introduction of the nursing diploma programme, student nurses have not been classified as employees since the 1997 census.
