Vol. 547 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Denis Naughten

Question:

120 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will approve funding for the Castlerea sewerage scheme, County Roscommon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2974/02]

Stage one of the Castlerea sewerage scheme is included in my Department's water services investment programme 2000 – 2002, as a scheme to commence construction this year. Clarification in relation to the completion of planning for the scheme has been requested from Roscommon County Council to allow the Department to finalise consideration of the contract documents submitted by the council.

Question:

121 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the status of a preliminary report submitted by Roscommon County Council in relation to Cootehall sewerage scheme; when he will sanction funding for this scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2975/02]

This scheme was sixth on the list of sewerage schemes submitted by Roscommon County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake fresh assessments of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the water services investment programme 2000-2002, announced in July 2000. Given the priority rating afforded to the scheme by the council, the level of competing demand and the funding available, it was not possible to include it in the programme at that time.

In August 2001, the council submitted a draft brief for the appointment of consultants to prepare a combined preliminary report for Cootehall and a number of other schemes. This proposal will be further considered in the context of the next phase of the water services investment programme.
