Vol. 547 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

John Perry

Question:

26 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the date he received an application from Ballymana national school, Craughwell, County Galway, for repairs, extensions and refurbishment; when it was approved; and when he will provide funding to allow work to start to comply with health and safety regulations. [2836/02]

I gave approval for the commencement of architectural planning for a two classroom extension, provision of ancillary accommodation and the refurbishment of the existing building at Ballymana national school in September 2000.

The initial architectural stages of the project were submitted to the building unit of my Department late last year. To enable my Department to complete its assessment of this submission, the consultant architect for this project has recently been requested to clarify the options for phasing this project so that matters of highest priority are addressed first, including the remediation of any asbestos and repairs to the roof. As soon as this information has been received the project will be advanced to the next stage of planning as quickly as possible.
