Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Compensation Payments.

John Perry

Question:

183 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the steps in place to make compensation payment available to farmers in County Sligo who due to BSE had to depopulate their herds; the number of farmers in County Sligo who are awaiting payment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3412/02]

It is the policy of my Department to compensate farmers for the value of their herd as soon as possible after BSE has been diagnosed. At any given time there are a number of farmers whose cases are being processed and compensation is paid once the valuation of the herd is agreed, the animals are depopulated and the necessary documentation is received from the farmer and from the relevant slaughterhouse. On rare occasions, investigations can delay payments.

There are currently no farmers in County Sligo awaiting payment of compensation for the depopulation of their herds due to BSE.
