Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Question:

220 Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of patients, in the various age brackets, who are attending hospitals and receiving treatment for Crohn's disease; and the annual rate of increase since 1980. [3244/02]

The information requested by the Deputy is contained in the following table.

The figures are derived from HIPE, hospital in-patient enquiry, data which give details of activity in publicly funded acute general hospitals in the State. This system records hospital episodes and is not a patient based system. Thus, where a patient is admitted into a hospital on more than one occasion, these individual hospital episodes are recorded.

Data prior to 1995 are not available and data for 2001 are not yet available as they are not complete.

Discharges with a principal diagnosis of regional enteritis also called Crohn's disease and annual rate of increase

1995 to 2000.
