Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Medical Cards.

David Stanton

Question:

251 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Health and Children if the cost of alternative medicines of therapies such as acupuncture or hydrotherapy are allowed under the medical card scheme; his plans to expand the medical card scheme in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3608/02]

At present the costs of alternative medicines and therapies such as acupuncture or hydrotherapy are not allowed under the medical card scheme and I do not have any plans at present to further extend medical card eligibility to include these products or services.

I am, however, committed to the introduction of a system of regulation for alternative and complementary therapists who work in this area. In June 2001, I convened a forum comprising relevant representative groups and training providers to examine and explore the practical issues involved in the preparation of a registration system for these therapists. This forum was facilitated by the Institute of Public Administration which also prepared a report of the day's dis cussions which was forwarded to the participants and other interested parties for consideration. I subsequently asked the Institute of Public Administration to prepare a report on proposals for the way forward. On receipt of this report, which is expected in March, I hope to be in a position to progress the issue further.
