Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Climate Change Strategy.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

264 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason there was no input from a medical person or addressing of health issues in the national climate change strategy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3228/02]

I refer to the reply to Questions Nos. 94 and 535 of 6 November 2001.

The primary purpose of the national climate change strategy is to achieve reductions in Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions in order to meet obligations under the Kyoto Protocol. The potential health implications of climate change, particularly as regards the developing world, are recognised in the strategy without, however, it having been considered necessary to arrange for specialised medical input to the preparation of the strategy.
