Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Law Enforcement.

Seán Haughey

Question:

322 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has satisfied himself that the law in relation to visible registration number plates on vehicles is being enforced; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3249/02]

I have been assured by the Garda that it enforces the law in relation to visible number plates on vehicles in terms of their dirt and their make-up, as in number plate background colour and font. The enforcement of the vehicle identity plate legislation is seen by the Garda Síochána as an important aid in the detection of other road traffic offences such as hit and run collisions and incidents of alleged dangerous driving. It is also considered important in the effective use of fixed-speed cameras and the prevention and detection of crime generally.
