Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Health and Safety Regulations.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

88 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment when it is intended to introduce legislation to increase fines for employers who breach safety rules in the construction industry and elsewhere; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3341/02]

Legislative proposals to amend the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989, are being finalised in the Department. Pertinent issues of offences and penalties are being addressed in this context, with a view to strengthening those provisions.

All such proposals will be subject to the normal process of legal drafting, approval by Government and passage through the Legislature. Therefore, it is not possible at this stage to be precise about the exact timing of the introduction of the legislation. A strengthened and updated Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989, will be of benefit to all sectors of employment, including the construction sector.

Question No. 89 answered with Question No. 61.
