Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Salmon Conservation.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

147 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the different conservation measures regarding salmon in each of the fisheries board areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3186/02]

At present there is in place a comprehensive set of conservation measures in relation to the exploitation of salmon by the commercial fishing and recreational angling sectors.

Commercial fishing for salmon is permitted only within six nautical miles of the baseline and within the set season for each type of fishing engine. Within the season there are restrictions relating to the days and times of fishing operations and in relation to the types of fishing gear which may be used. Furthermore, the number of licences which may be issued by the regional fish eries boards for the various types of fishing engines is limited by the provisions of the control of fishing for salmon orders.
In relation to the recreational angling sector, I have introduced the following measures on the recommendation of the National Salmon Commission: wild salmon tagging scheme which commenced in January 2001; bag limit of one salmon per angler per day from the beginning of January to the end of May; and prohibition on the sale of salmon caught by rod and line. In addition to the above regulatory measures, the fisheries boards also apply a range of conservation measures in relation to fisheries which are under their management.
I have recently announced the introduction of quotas for the taking of salmon by commercial fishing engines commencing this year. The detailed practical arrangements are being finalised at present. In parallel with the introduction of quotas for the commercial fishery, I have requested the National Salmon Commission to recommend on bag limits for the totality of the 2002 angling season and any other enhanced conservation measures which it considers appropriate.
