Vol. 547 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 31 from Deputy Gormley. I call on Deputy Gormley to state the matter.

I seek the suspension of the business of the House under Standing Order 31 to discuss an issue of urgent public importance; namely, the report of the national cancer registry, which shows that many patients suffering from cancer do not receive adequate treatment and that the treatment regime compares unfavourably with other countries. There is an urgent need to address the issues in the report, entitled Cancer in Ireland 1994 to 1998: Incidence, Mortality, Treatment and Survival.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be in accordance with Standing Order 31.
