Vol. 547 No. 4

Written Answers. - Marine Accidents.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

46 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when he expects to receive the report of the investigation into the recent collision in Dublin Bay between a cargo vessel and a yacht in which three people died; if changes are planned to safety procedures arising from the accident; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3500/02]

As I advised the House previously, most recently on 21 November, this tragic accident is currently being investigated by my Department under the Merchant Shipping Acts. The investigation cannot be finalised until the inquests, currently under way, have been completed. As you will appreciate it would not be proper at this time to discuss this matter further until the investigation is complete and the inspectors have made their report to me. In accordance with normal practice the report into the accident will be published following legal vetting and the application of natural justice procedures. If, in the course of the investigation or arising from any recommendations contained in the report, additional safety measures are found to be necessary, I shall have them brought in as quickly as possible.
