Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Disposal of Animal Carcases.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

162 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the procedure for disposal of dead sheep arising from the activity of marauding dogs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4194/02]

The disposal of dead sheep or other fallen farm animals is governed by the rules set out in the European Communities (Disposal, Processing and Placing on the Market of Animal By-products) Regulations 1994 (S.I. No. 257 of 1994).

Under the provisions of these regulations, dead animals such as sheep may be disposed of by collection and processing in an approved rendering plant or by burial under a license issued by the local district veterinary office.
