Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Sean Fleming

Question:

172 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if his attention has been drawn to the fact that some of the major milk co-operatives have issued superlevy warnings and in that context have informed suppliers that milk will not be accepted back into collection unless they have reached the registration level under European Union Directive 92/46; his views on whether this is an unfair imposition with little notice to small producers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4496/02]

Raw milk to be used in the manufacture of milk products or heat-treated milk for human consumption must meet the hygiene standards prescribed by Directive 92/46/EEC. That directive is given the force of law in Ireland by Statutory Instrument No. 9 of 1996. These are, therefore, long-standing requirements. It is the responsibility of milk producers and processors in the first instance to ensure that these standards are adhered to.
