246 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide a progress report on the implementation of improvements to be carried out in Portlaoise General Hospital, breast cancer unit arising from the ?634,869 allocated to the Midland Health Board for this purpose in December 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4494/02]

As the Deputy is aware, the implementation of improvements to be carried out in Portlaoise General Hospital is the statutory responsibility of the Midland Health Board in the first instance. A sum of €634,869 was allocated in December 2000 for the development of symptomatic breast disease services in the Midland Health Board in line with the report of the sub-group of the National Cancer Forum. Consultations on this matter between my Department and the board have been ongoing and my Department is currently awaiting proposals for the development of symptomatic breast disease services at Portlaoise General Hospital.

248 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason a person (details supplied) in County Mayo has not been called to Mater Misericordiae Hospital for surgery. [4519/02]

The provision of medical services in this instance is the responsibility of the Western Health Board. My Department has asked the chief executive officer of the board to investigate the position in relation to this matter and to reply to the Deputy directly.
