Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Youth Services.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

411 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether there should be more financial resources given to the establishment of No Name Clubs; if his attention has been drawn to the vitally important work such clubs do in combating underage drinking; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4222/02]

The No Name Club currently receives funding from the youth affairs section of my Department under the youth service grant scheme. This scheme makes money available to national and major regional organisations to support costs associated with their programmes and services on an annual basis. Funding to the No Name Club in the last three years has been as follows: in 1999, £52,364 plus £10,000 once-off towards the cost of 21st birthday celebration; in 2000, £59,938 plus £12,200 once off start up costs for new office; and in 2001, £79,610.

The organisation has received a 50% increase over the last three years, an indication of the importance, which I place on the work of the organisation. Local No Name Clubs may also avail of the annual local youth club grant scheme, which provides money for the growth and development of local youth organisations. This scheme is administered through the vocational education committees.

The allocation to the No Name Club in 2002 will be considered in the light of available financial resources and existing commitments.
