Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Sean Fleming

Question:

425 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the proposed improvement works to a school (details supplied) in County Laois; when construction will commence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4295/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

The school referred to by the Deputy is being refurbished and extended as part of the Government's programme and is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.

427 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the proposed improvement works to a school (details supplied) in County Laois; when construction will commence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4297/02]

The examination of the application for improvement works at the school referred to by the Deputy is being finalised in the planning and building unit of my Department at present. On completion of this examination, a decision will be made on how best the accommodation requirements of the school can be addressed. The board of management will be advised of the decision at the earliest possible date.

It would not be possible at this point to give a precise timescale for the commencement of any improvement works sanctioned for the school.
