Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

431 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science the status of the development of the new sports hall at Presentation secondary school, Milltown, County Kerry; when the current stage will be completed; the reason there has been a delay in the processing of the application to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4303/02]

The allocation for post-primary buildings in 2002 is €182.31 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in post-primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of investment in the post-primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

An extension, including a PE hall of 406 square metres, is being provided at Presentation secondary school, Milltown, County Kerry as part of the Government's programme and is currently at stage four in architectural planning. The stage four submission is currently being examined by the technical staff of my Department. The key to expediting progress in the planning and design of this project is the client only accepting from the design team that it appointed, submissions that are in compliance with my Department's design team procedures.
