Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

456 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will arrange a meeting for the school principals and architects of two schools (details supplied) in Dublin 16 with officials of the planning and building section of his Department in order to expedite plans for the urgently required upgrading and extension of these schools. [4618/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

My Department will give detailed consideration to an application for improved accommodation from the schools referred to by the Deputy as part of the expanded building programme.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

457 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Education and Science if a school extension (details supplied) in County Kildare will be included in the 2002 programme. [4619/02]

The school referred to by the Deputy is being extended-refurbished as part of the Government's programme and is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible under the expanded building programme.

John Bruton

Question:

458 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received proposals for improvement works at Lismullen national school; the nature of the proposals; when his Department's architect visited the school; if a report from the architect has been received; the action being taken by his Department in this regard; and when he expects work to commence on the extension at Lismullen. [4620/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

A proposed building project for Lismullen national school will proceed to architectural planning and to the preparation of tender documents, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.
