Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Question:

57 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise when the scheme of radon radiation grants for homeowners will be introduced; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4399/02]

The Government has approved the introduction of a radon remediation grant scheme, to be administered by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, to assist householders to carry out radon remediation work in their homes. Funding for this scheme has been provided in my Department's Vote for this year. I am advised that the scheme cannot be introduced in the absence of primary legislation. The Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill, passed Committee Stage on 23 January 2002. I announced in Committee that I propose to seek permission at Report Stage to move the necessary amendments to provide for the scheme. I am awaiting a date for Report Stage.
