Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Nuclear Plants.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

62 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the meetings which have taken place with the European Commission to discuss Sellafield; the outcome of such meetings; and the further meetings which are planned to take place in view of the review of the EURATOM Treaty. [4479/02]

Legal responsibility for Sellafield is primarily a national matter for the UK. While I have had no meetings with the European Commission to discuss Sellafield, the relevant commissioner is well aware of my position arising from my interventions at Council etc. The Commission has recently taken an interest in our legal strategy in OSPAR and ITLOS and this may well give rise to meetings at official level. While I understand that a review of the EURATOM Treaty may be under complementation in the Commission, no such review has yet been formally proposed.
