Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Postal Services.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

76 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the position regarding the pilot scheme of super post offices; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4377/02]

As recommended in the Flynn Report, An Post has invited applications from the non-automated post offices to participate in a voluntary pilot scheme to test the concept of provid ing postal services on an agency basis. Under the pilot scheme, sub-postmasters would surrender their contracts and opt to become postal agents. The terms for the pilot scheme have been agreed with the Irish Postmasters Union. I understand that it is the company's intention, as agreed with the postmasters, to convert 26 post offices to agency status under the voluntary scheme. I have no statutory function in relation to the choice of offices to convert to agency status which is an operational matter for An Post.
