Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Seaweed Industry.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

110 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if progress has been made in regard to finding an alternative industry for the Arramara Seaweed Plant at Meenmore, Dungloe, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4716/02]

Work is ongoing to identify an alternative project for the Meenmore facility in association with Aire Stáit na Gaeltachta and Údarás na Gaeltachta.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

111 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources his plans to take further supplies of seaweed from harvesters in the north west for the Arramara plant at Kilkerrin, County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4717/02]

Dinny McGinley

Question:

112 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans there are to purchase seaweed from the Donegal Harvesters for the Kilkeerin plant; and if compensation payments will be made to those who have been supplying the Meenmore unit since 1968. [4769/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 111 and 112 together.

Arramara Teo. will continue to take quantities of seaweed offered to them by Donegal suppliers as and when they are required for their plant at Cill Chiaráin. Arramara has been experiencing difficulties recently in sourcing haulage at realistic rates for the transport of seaweed from Donegal and efforts are continuing to try and overcome these.
