Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

David Stanton

Question:

134 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to the starting date of the feasibility study into the development of rail services in Cork to include the re-opening of the Cork-Midleton rail link; the cost of such a study; the company which is to carry out the study; the expected completion date; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4811/02]

I am informed that Iarnród Éireann recently sought tenders for the carrying out of this feasibility study and that the closing date for tenders is 27 February next. The cost of the study and the company to undertake it will, of course, be dependent on the outcome of the tendering process. I am advised that Iarnród Éireann hopes to have the study completed by the summer.

Question:

135 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise when new rolling stock will be in place on the mainline rail network; the amount and cost of same; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4812/02]

Iarnród Éireann is examining tenders for the supply of up to 67 new mainline locomotive-hauled carriages. These trains will provide a significant improvement in the quality of mainline services. As the tendering process is not yet completed, Iarnród Éireann has not yet advised as to the actual cost and timeframe.
