There are currently three mobile phone operators providing services to Irish subscribers. While there is ongoing contact between my Department and the Office of the Director of Telecommunications Regulation concerning telecommunications services in general, including mobile communications, I have no plans at present to instruct the director regarding the future development of the sector.

Question:

147 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the degree to which she expects to approve the expansion or extension of the mobile telephone service; if third generation technology is likely to be accessible at an early date; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4825/02]

The determination of the appropriate number of service providers to license for provision of 3G services and the award of licences is a matter for the Director of Telecommunications Regulation. Following a public consultation, and analysis of the market and spectrum availability, the Director of Telecommunications Regulation has decided to license four service providers and has outlined the licensing framework to be employed.

Subsequently the availability of 3G technology will be a matter for the licensed operators in conformity with their licence conditions.
