Written Answers. - Offshore Islands.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

182 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the moneys provided for car ferries in County Donegal since 1997; and the impact that this will have on the entire north coast. [4884/02]

My Department has a contract with the ferry company, Maoin na Farraige Teoranta, to provide a scheduled roll-on/roll-off ferry service between Arranmore Island and Burtonport. This contract is for the period from 1 November 2001 to 31 October 2004 at a cost of €120,625 per annum. Prior to the commencement of this contract, Údarás na Gaeltachta supplied the vessel, the Oileán Árann Mhóir, on a nominal lease to Maoin na Farraige Teoranta to provide this ser vice. This service is of vital importance to the Arranmore Island community as it provides it with daily access to the mainland and its associated benefits, such as employment, shopping and State services.
