Vol. 548 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

185 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of successful prosecutions taken under the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 2000, for the sale of alcohol to minors in each Garda Síochána division; if successful prosecutions have been taken in the Dublin metropolitan area; the number of prosecutions which were unsuccessful in the Dublin metropolitan area; the reason in each case; his views on whether there is need for further regulation or legislation to assist the Garda Síochána enforcement in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4856/02]

I regret that I have been informed by the Garda authorities it has not been possible in the time available to obtain the statistics requested by the Deputy. I will contact the Deputy as soon as the figures are available.

In relation to the question of legislation, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 668 and 669 of 6 November 2001, taken together, which outlines the provisions in place to deal with, inter alia, the sale of alcohol to minors.
